Lot of my friends and acquaintances ask why on earth I reconstruct the civil war and how I got into it. Valid questions, two of them.
I guess that many people think we Extras are a bunch of neo-Nazis at worst and at best barjots. In fact, there are many reasons people take this as a hobby, and you hear most of them if you speak to enough of them.
Generally, the reasons have much to do with fun and very little to do with politics, or anything else negative. We are mainly of people who have not forgotten how to play, and we love to play with others.

My own first glimpse of this activity occurred here in Bellingham 16 years ago. We have seen an advertisement in the Bellingham Herald on living camp in the history of the civil war and battle between where shrimp shack used to be maintained and the Whatcom Museum.
We walk to check it out and my son adolescents, BJ, was amazed. He and his friend Sam enlists instantly. They were not driving again, then we have lead to the events. I won uniform for him and, soon, others as well. We enjoyed camping and socialization.
Soon my parents joined us. We have started dressing up as civilians. My dad and BJ finally begin a unit of engineers to provide loads for the effects of the battle ground.
My sister and my brother and his family began to come along. My younger son, Rob, was so anxious to get on the ground that he took in the trumpet and he played the drum, as the musicians may be younger than the soldiers. He fell in love with a sword of Navy and that is how I wound up in the Confederate Marines, an artillery unit.
One day, they decided to form some of us to perform on the barrel so that they could field some skirmishers. What is - this. I have only brought a hoop skirt dances since then. My father, my son and I still reconstruct. When my granddaughter, Victoria, acts as our powder monkey, we have four generations in the field.
What keeps us is not only the pleasure of pretending to be someone else and race around do seem to draw on each other as children's. It is the friendships that last for years, even if you usually see only these re-enactments friends. We always stay in touch and are there for one another at marriages and funerals and other events of life.
This is how any change when we dress in the clothes from another era and take on the character of someone in a simpler world. Children say "Yes, Madam" and "No, Sir," the men take a woman from the arm or carry her basket for her and rarely hear you swear.
Us sleeping in tents and cooked on fire. My mother said it looked like camping with 100 of your best friends. Folks gather around the fire and sing, play instruments and tell stories.
It is usually a dance or cream ice social or school (talent show) Saturday night. There is often a real marriage. The children run and play together without the help of a computer or a television screen. Several generations interact. Confederate camp families together.
Most of us is bitten history or becoming one. Washington schools only touch briefly on the civil war in the classes of fifth and eighth, even if it has been the largest single crisis, our country has ever faced.
Think about it: how many other countries emerged from the civil war not only intact but stronger? He has contributed to shaping our identity as a nation rather than as an association of States. It led to the end of slavery. While more US troops died during the civil war during the Spanish-American war, world wars, the war of Korea and war of Vietnam together, there are also a number of social, medical and technological progress as well.
We give demonstrations to schools to involve children in the history. Once the Meridian Middle School, we had a student who remained during the break to question most of us. When he finally, leaves teachers told us with enthusiasm that this young man had been completely disinterested in school, but we had their now given a handle to do participate with.
We now present an event of the school for all Whatcom County fifth - and eighth-graders and homeschoolers with various stations on different aspects of address, women and children to the drilling, the causes of the war.
We all put a lot of effort into our costumes, camps and the personas and take as a compliment when someone notices and a question. My father, Bob, works the crowd demonstrations to answer questions such as, "what is American?" and "who are the bad guys." Our units of Confederate artillery and Marine Union maintains poster to encourage questions.
I expect to stay with my hobby odd, until I can no longer camp or go on the ground, and even then I'll probably just move to engineers, I tease my father consists of "the elderly and the infirm.
