The University of Colorado at Boulder is most commonly referred to as CU or CU Boulder by Colorado residents. This public research university is located directly in the foothills of picturesque Boulder, Colorado and has a very rich history dating back to 1876. CU is also considered as one of the prestigious Ivy League schools in America. In 2010, there were just under 30,000 students spread out over the 150 academic programs, available between the nine different colleges and schools that CU consists of. The school receives hundreds of millions of dollars every year from various sponsors, fund raisers, alumni and sports enthusiasts because as much as CU is known for producing high level scholars they are also recognized for their sports teams.
The school offers sports programs for both men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, skiing, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and of course football. In addition, there are approximately 1,500 students participating in 34 different intercollegiate club sports annually at the school. These teams are officially nicknamed the Buffaloes and proudly adorn the school's unofficial colors of black and gold. Although each team has their own supporters, the CU football team by far has the most dedicated followers and fans.
When there are home games the whole city shows up to support the Buffs. Black and gold can be seen as far as the eye can see, in and around the city. Office buildings, street corners, highways, cars, and people themselves are all decorated with the CU memorabilia, flags, tee-shirts and jerseys. The three official songs chanted out at every CU Football game, "Glory Colorado", "Go Colorado" and "Fight CU", are always a huge motivator for the team as the crowd proudly cheers them on. 1934 marked the first running of CU's live mascot; an American Bison named Ralphie, in the game of CU verses the University of Denver. Back then, a buffalo calf was rented and simply ran down the sidelines, nowadays CU has two live buffalo mascots named Ralphie IV and Ralphie V, that charge down around the end zone and head directly for the opposing teams sidelines. This mascot leads the team out on the field at the beginning of the game as well as after halftime. It is an amazing sight to see and is one of the most exhilarating moments of the game.
The football team at CU is considered 16th on the all-time win list and the 22nd in all-time winning percentage. The team's new coach, Jon Embree was introduced back in December of 2010 and says he has long road ahead of him to get the team back to the winning streak they lost in 2005. Despite a bleak prediction for 2011, Boulder fans are confident in their number one team!
